Amelia the SkunkAmelia, our wonderful black and white skunk, has fortunately been de-pewed as we like to say!  She came from Iowa and on her trip here they lost her on the tarmac in Chicago.  That's how she got the name Amelia Earhart!  Because she was 'lost in flight'.  She is very curious and really enjoys visiting schools.  Skunks don't generally make the best house pets.  They like to dig and are very curious so they will get into everything.  Amelia lives in a large outdoor enclosure.  Although she is generally a night creature, she loves to visit kids and will even give them a good sniff as if she can't decide if us humans smell ok!  It's important for us to teach children that skunks can carry rabies and that it's best to stay away from them in the wild.  But we don't need to be terrified of them.  We just need to leave them alone in their natural environment.  Amelia has regular vet visits and has had her rabies vaccinations.
